Simple Dal tamatar

Have I mentioned my husband is a very easy man to please. Sure he loves his food, but give him some roti and dal the man is happy. Simple things in life is more often than not the most beautiful and talking about simple, dals hardly come simpler than this. There is dal tadka of course but that’s a different matter. So here is something you can make when in a hurry. It is a good combo with rice and chapathi. ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, here comes Dal tamatar.

Dal Tamatar

Masoor dal – 1/2 cup (I use masoor dal you can of course use any other dal you want)

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp

Onion – 1/2 chopped finely

Ginger – 1 tsp finely chopped

Tomato – 1 chopped

Green chillies – 3 – 4

Amchoor – 1/2 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Salt – to taste

Hot water – as needed


Take your pressure cooker. Pour  a little oil splutter mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. Add the onions and ginger and sauté till onions become  pink. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chillies, amchoor, turmeric powder, asafoetida and saute well. Add the washed and cleaned dal and saute for a couple of minutes and add the hot water and pressure cook till done.

Open the cooker after cooking add salt and test consistency. Garnish with coriander leaves. Your dal tamatar is ready. Enjoy
